FINDING IT HARD TO READ THE BIBLE?
The Bible is a very interesting book. It is referred to as a library of books because it contains a collection of sixty-six (66) books. There are very many interesting stories that talk about one thing and one thing only, the relationship of the LORD of the universe with humanity. From my own perspective, I would say that it is a collection of stories that talk about the love of the LORD for His creation.
Let us dive into the world of fantasy for a minute. The Almighty God, the creator of heaven and earth, the one who is worshipped by all creations; the heavens proclaim His glory and the earth proclaim the work of His hands (Psalm 19:1). The oceans roar to shout His name, the mountains rise high to lift His name; every other creature has no business with Him apart from worshipping Him, but He found interest in humanity and actually formed a relationship with it. This is why David the Psalmist asked, what is mankind that you are so mindful of, human beings that you care for them? (Psalm 8:4).
Without further ado, let us explore what makes the Bible so easy and enjoyable. Many people find the Bible difficult to read because of two reasons:
- They do not know the tone of the Bible
- They have not clearly understood the personality of God
The tone of the Bible
Just like in the English comprehension, we usually denote the tone of the speaker in order to know more about the mood of the speaker. When the speaker uses a harsh tone it usually denotes the that the speaker was angry at the time of speech. Likewise, when the speaker uses a gentle or soft tone, it usually indicates the calmness of the speaker. So let us take this insight and actually use it to identify the tone of the Bible.
1 Kings 19:11-13 When God wanted to speak to Elijah, He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then there was a great and powerful wind that tore the mountains apart and shatterd the rocks but the LORD was not in the wind, after the wind came an earthquake but the LORD was not in the earthquake, and after the earthquake came fire but the LORD was not in the fire, and after the fire came a gentle whisper. The Christian standard Bible says, “there was a voice, a soft whisper”. This is the voice of the LORD to Elijah His servant. He uses a soft and gentle voice to talk to Elijah. This was a time that Elijah was escaping from Jezebel who wanted to kill him because of the contest at mount Carmel. Elijah demonstrated a big show of the true God by calling out fire from heaven and making an open shame of the gods of the four hundred prophets of Baal. God appeared to Elijah and instead of scolding him; saying that he already proved His strength by sending out fire from heaven hence there should be no reason to fear Queen Jezebel, He talked to him in a gentle voice.
