The Personality of God

The personality of God is one that has been very much mis-interpreted by various scholars, preachers, and individuals. Listen to what the scripture says, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV).

Rightly diving the word of truth is extremely crucial in knowing the personality of God. Well, it is also important to know that if you can rightly divide it, you can wrongly divide it as well. Hence, anyone who explains the wrong personality of God has simply wrongly divided the word of truth. Having laid that foundation, we can now discuss the relevant subject which has been used to mis-understand the true nature of God; The God of the old testament. Well in the old testament, we see a picture of God as one who is fierce and very strict. The strictness is very exaggerated until it almost seems like He does not care for His people. We see the scenes where God punished Pharaoh and all the Egyptians with ten dreadful plagues, where He killed everyone in the whole earth except Noah and his family, where he allowed Elijah to kill the four hundred prophets of Baal, and every time where He supported the Israelites in defeating their enemies and killed them all. When you read such scenes in the bible, it is normal to think that God is so ruthless, but I tell you the truth, this is not His personality. Hebrews 1:3 says, Him (Referring to Jesus) being the radiance of His Glory, and the exact image of His person. Paul explains that Jesus is the exact image of the Father, if you really want to know the personality of God, look at Jesus’ life. When you read about Jesus’ story, you will see that through out His life He was always concentrating on healing people, raising them from the dead, driving out demons, and teaching on the Kingdom of God.

Now the best person to explain a character is the character himself. If your friend was told to describe you, he or she would not give a hundred percent description of you, besides no one knows you one hundred percent. There are secrets that only you know yourself. In fact, your friend might also say some things that you would think that that is definitely not who you are, you may have behaved sometime like that but that does not mean that is who you are. Hence the only person who can describe the personality of a character is the character himself. Well God appears to Moses in the Bible and describes Himself fully, who He really is. Let us take a look at this. Exodus 34:6 (NLT) The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Exodus 34:7 (NLT) I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. So these are the words of God Himself, explaining who He really is.
